Trump Threatens Spain Trade War Over Iran Military Base Dispute
President Trump has escalated his confrontation with Spain by threatening to cut off all trade with the country after it denied U.S. military use of Spanish bases for operations in the Iran war. The diplomatic crisis intensifies as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez doubled down on his criticism of the U.S. strikes against Iran, describing the escalating Middle East conflict as a "disaster".
The dispute centers on Spain's refusal to allow U.S. military forces to use its bases in connection with strikes on Iran, saying the facilities must "operate within the framework of international law". Trump announced the trade embargo during a Tuesday White House meeting, telling reporters "We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain".
Spain has pushed back against Trump's threats, with the government stating it has "the necessary resources to contain the possible impact of the trade embargo by the US". In a Wednesday televised address, Sánchez declared his position as "No to the war" and said Spain would not be "complicit in something that is bad for the world and is also contrary to our values and interests, just out of fear of reprisals from someone".
The threat faces significant legal challenges since Spain is a member of the European Union, and the EU negotiates trade on behalf of all its 27 member states. Spanish officials emphasized that any trade review must respect "the autonomy of private companies, international law, and bilateral agreements between the European Union and the United States".
The European Union has rallied behind Spain, with European Council President Antonio Costa expressing the EU's "full solidarity" with Madrid. The conflict adds another layer of complexity to ongoing U.S.-EU trade relations, as the EU struck a trade deal with the U.S. last year after months of economic uncertainty over Trump's tariff policies.
